Why six weeks is the wrong interval for most of your body
Nearly every clinic books laser hair removal on a single fixed interval regardless of where on the body they are treating. The hair growth cycle that makes the treatment work runs at completely different speeds in different places, and booking against one number wastes a share of your sessions.
The booking script is the same almost everywhere. You finish a session, the front desk asks when you want to come back, and the answer is six weeks. Sometimes four, sometimes eight, but one number, applied to whichever body part you happen to be treating that day. A patient doing upper lip and lower legs in the same course of treatment gets the same interval for both, and nobody in the room finds that strange.
It is strange, and it is the most common avoidable inefficiency in a course of laser hair removal.
The original element in this piece is a per region interval framework, assembled from published hair cycle behavior across body sites and stated with its methodology out in the open, showing where the standard single interval is roughly right and where it is clearly wrong. No clinic publishes this, because no single study measures growth cycle duration across all the regions people treat. It has to be assembled from separate sources, which is exactly why the assembled version does not exist anywhere and why the default is one number for everything.
Why the interval matters at all. Laser hair removal works by delivering energy that is absorbed by pigment in the hair shaft and conducted to the structures that regenerate the follicle. That only works when those structures are close to the shaft and metabolically active, which is to say only during anagen, the active growth phase. A follicle in telogen, the resting phase, has effectively separated from the machinery the treatment is aiming at. Fire the laser at it and nothing durable happens.
At any given moment, only a fraction of the follicles in an area are in anagen. That fraction is why the treatment requires a course rather than a single visit, and it is the reason session counts run where they do. Every session catches the anagen fraction present that day. The purpose of waiting between sessions is to let a fresh batch of follicles cycle into anagen so the next session has new targets.
Now the key point. The proportion of follicles in anagen at any time, and the length of the whole cycle, are not properties of a person. They are properties of a body region. Scalp hair has an anagen phase measured in years, which is why it grows to great lengths. Eyebrow and eyelash hair has an anagen phase measured in weeks, which is why it does not. Every region people treat sits somewhere between those extremes, and the spread across regions is large. Even the general guidelines for laser hair removal acknowledge that timing should follow the cycle rather than the calendar, without translating that into per region numbers.
How the framework was assembled, and what it says. There is no single paper listing intervals by body site. What exists is the underlying hair biology, which establishes that anagen duration and the anagen to telogen ratio vary substantially by region, plus a body of clinical laser studies conducted on specific regions at specific intervals with reported outcomes. Reading the second against the first gives a defensible ordering, and ordering is what you actually need for booking.
Face, meaning upper lip, chin and sideburn area, sits at the fast end. Facial hair cycles quickly and regrows visibly within a few weeks. Four weeks is a reasonable interval here and six is often too long, meaning some follicles that entered and left anagen between your visits were never treated. Hormonally driven facial hair, as in PCOS and hirsutism, also tends to be the most persistent, which compounds the cost of a loose interval.
Underarm and bikini sit in the middle, and this is the region the standard advice actually fits. Four to six weeks is genuinely appropriate, which is probably why six weeks became the universal default: it works well for two of the most commonly treated areas and got generalized to everything else.
Legs, arms, back and chest sit at the slow end. Hair on these regions cycles considerably more slowly, and returning at six weeks means a meaningful share of follicles have not yet re entered anagen. Eight to ten weeks, and sometimes longer for the back, gives a better yield per session. The clinical work on trunk hair removal with a diode laser in men is conducted on this slower cycling territory, and the interval structure in trunk studies is not the interval structure used for the face.
Notice what this means financially. If you are paying per session, the fast regions are where a too long interval wastes money, and the slow regions are where a too short interval wastes money. Both errors cost you the same thing: a session that treated fewer follicles than it could have.
The one signal that beats any schedule. Watch the regrowth. The right time to return is shortly after you see new hair emerging in the treated area, because emergence is the visible marker of follicles that have entered anagen. If you arrive at the clinic and the area is still almost completely bare, you are early, and the session will have few targets. If the area has substantially regrown and the hairs are getting long, you are late.
This is the correction that no fixed number can make for you, because cycle length varies between individuals as well as between regions. It also explains a common and demoralizing pattern: the first two sessions produce dramatic clearance, the third seems to do less, and the patient concludes the laser stopped working. Frequently what happened is that the first sessions cleared the large anagen fraction present at the start, and the interval was too short for a comparable fraction to have cycled back in.
Two things this does not change. It does not change the settings, and it does not change how many total sessions you need. Region specific intervals get you the same result in fewer wasted visits rather than in fewer total effective treatments. And it does not override the safety spacing that applies if you had a strong reaction, blistering or pigment change last time, in which case waiting longer is correct regardless of cycle. Interval discipline also does not compensate for a wavelength that is wrong for your skin, which remains the more consequential decision and is covered under choosing a provider.
What the studies do not tell you. Precise anagen duration figures for every treated body region in humans, across ethnicities and sexes, are not well established in the published literature. Much of the region specific hair cycle work is older, some of it small, and some of the most cited comparative cycle data comes from animal models rather than humans. Comparative laser trials such as the classic alexandrite versus diode comparison over four sessions fix the interval by protocol rather than testing it, so there is no randomized evidence that a four week facial interval beats six weeks. This framework is an assembly of biology plus clinical practice, and it is presented as such.
The takeaway. When the front desk asks when you want to rebook, the answer should depend on what was treated. Four weeks for the face, four to six for underarm and bikini, eight to ten for legs, arms, back and chest, and in every case adjusted by what your regrowth actually shows you. It costs nothing to ask for a different interval, and over a full course it is the difference between paying for eight sessions and paying for ten.
